Foggy Moon- Code of Conduct
- Foggy Moon strives to create a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages, identities, and experience levels. We invite you to help us keep this a joyful space for as many people as possible, and to seek help from the organizers, board or safety coordinators if you are hurt or othered by members of this community.
- Contra can be high energy and while rare, injuries can happen. As a community, we can support each other by being gentle and adaptable with our partners and their needs, and by maintaining control over our own bodies.
- If you feel unsafe, get hurt, are touched or spoken to in a way that you don’t want to be, or are worried that you or others are making someone else feel unsafe, please talk to a board member, safety coordinator, caller, or friend!
- Contra dance has implied consent for touch– hands, shoulders, wrists for example. Flourishes should be invited and not demanded, and additional contact should only happen with explicit and ongoing consent. Please keep in mind that each person you dance with will have different physical limitations and preferences, so please make an effort to check in with each other.
- Apologize for accidental touching. Inappropriate touching or harassment of any sort is not tolerated. If accidental inappropriate touching does occur please apologize.
- Anyone can dance either role. When dancing down the line, dance with whichever neighbor is coming at you! Additionally, regardless of gender or role preference, anyone can ask anyone to dance (and anyone can decline!).
- For experienced dancers, it can be really helpful to invite newer dancers to dance with you! Learning from each other is the quickest and most fun way to learn.
- If someone says no, accept it gracefully! Whether declining a dance, a flourish or twirl, a form of increased physical contact, or any interaction on or off the dance floor, if someone says no, accept this as their final answer.
- You have the right to leave the line. If you are leaving the line because you are tired or need a bio break, it is customary to leave the line only when out at the top or bottom; you are more important than the dance and you may leave the line in the middle if needed for your safety and comfort.
- Many people find that part of the joy of contra dancing is the opportunity to meet so many new people. Keep an open mind to new connections while remembering that we each always have the right to decline a dance with someone or to sit a dance out!
- Strongly scented products and artificial scents can cause reactions for members of our community. Please be mindful when choosing hygiene products at this dance weekend.
- If you are feeling ill, please stay home. Masks are welcome but not required– we will work to have good ventilation at the dance hall.
